EU Commission chief blasts David Cameron for blocking euro deal and threatens UK may lose rebate - by Torcuil Crichton

Britain's isolation in Europe deepened yesterday when a top EU official attacked David Cameron’s negotiating tactics. The attack from European Commission president José Manuel Barroso came during a debate in the European parliament in Strasbourg.

Barroso told MEPs that talks dragged on because Britain would not accept amendments to the Lisbon Treaty. But he insisted that the Prime Minister’s decision to deploy the UK’s veto to block treaty change did not amount to a “split” between the 17 euro states and the rest. Barroso’s remarks came as a French MEP also threatened that Britain could lose its budget rebate.

Joseph Daul, head of the European People’s Party group, said: “If UK solidarity, as it seems, has been abandoned towards the other 26, I can’t see why they should make an extra gesture towards the British.”

Note EU-Digest: Unfortunately Britain's actions during the last EU summit has clearly shown that their interest in being a member of the EU is not one where self interest and the safeguarding of EU unity and solidarity go hand in hand.
