Turkey awarded contracts worth 15.7 billion lira ($7.8bn) for the construction of 15 city hospitals and a health center to a series of mostly Turkish firms on Thursday, as its seeks to modernize health services through public-private partnerships.
The Ministry of Health signed agreements with contractors including Turkey’s Akfen, Ronesans Insaat, Gama Holding, Kayi Insaat, Dia, Emsas, Yildizlar, Turkerler, YDA and Italy’s Astaldi.
The biggest contracts were awarded to Emsas, for a 2.2bn lira hospital in Istanbul, Dia Holding, for a 1.9bn lira facility in Ankara’s Bilkent district, and a consortium of Astaldi and Turkerler for a hospital in Ankara’s Etlik district worth 1.8bn lira.
Turkey’s healthcare industry has grown rapidly on the back of a near tripling in nominal wealth per capita over the past decade, stretched state hospitals, and ever more people taking out private health insurance in the nation of 76 million.
In February, the Turkish parliament passed new regulations aimed at making private investment in the sector easier.
