EU proposes deep cuts in eel fishing to restore severely depleted stocks

The European Commission on Thursday proposed a drastic cut in eel fishing to restore stocks severely depleted by overfishing, pollution, water turbines, dams and weirs. The EU government should draft plans by 2007 to ensure 40 per cent of adult eel migrate from inland waters across Europe to the Atlantic Ocean to spawn, the commission said. "The recent levels of young fish joining the stock have been as low as one per cent of their historic levels," the commission said in a report to the 25 EU governments, which must approve any preservation measure. Until national preservation plans are in place, eel fishing should be banned during the first two weeks of every month, the commission said. It made the proposal after consulting with EU governments, the aquaculture industry and professional and sport fishing organizations.
