First shots fired in EU budget wars: UK in trouble
Seven governments led the charge as 23 of Europe’s 25 foreign ministers rounded on British EU presidency budget proposals on Wednesday. France, Spain, Poland, Italy, Portugal, Latvia and Luxembourg were united in strong rejection of the UK’s financial package for 2007 to 2013. French Foreign Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy called on London to go back to the drawing board. “This proposal cannot form a sound basis for negotiations,” he told reporters. “The UK will leave today’s negotiations disappointed by the harsh reality that all members – bar Malta – are opposed to the British plans.”
