French left unites against EU services shake-up
The French left is using an EU row over the services directive to heal last year’s divisions over the European constitution. Free-market legislation - named the ‘Bolkestein directive’ after its Dutch architect – is blamed for the French ‘non’ vote in May 29 2005. French newspapers observe that a campaign against the services directive is being used by left-winger for reconciliation after socialist splits over the constitution issue.
Le Figaro and Liberation explain that both centrists and hardline left-wingers, both “ouistes” and “nonistes”, will unite to vote against a compromise agreed last week by European parliament political groups.
