Saco, Maine, Business seeking $400,000 to expand facillities and meet EU pollution requirements by Kate Irish Collins
SACO (Feb 10, 2006): Saunders Electronics in Saco, Maine is seeking $400,000 from the state, with the City Council's help, to expand, completely change its manufacturing process and bring more than a dozen skilled jobs to the area. Saunders wants to expand its facility in the Industrial Park from 9,000 square feet to 12,000 square feet, mostly with the construction of mezzanine platforms, which will allow the company to store products on the main floor and move production up to the mezzanine level.
The circuit boards it produces are used mostly for military, medical and industrial applications. But, beginning on July 1 the European Union will no longer allow the import of electronic products with lead components. The total project cost to change over to a lead-free production process is estimated at more than $900,000. The company would not have to pay back the $400,000, and it has financing for the remainder of the costs.
