Chirac in a bind over new labour laws - by Thomas Hubert
French president Jacques Chirac is on the frontline. For more than two months, he had left the difficult task of implementing a reform of labour regulation to French prime minister Dominique de Villepin. Despite growing opposition to the proposal, the French constitutional court has ruled that the bill is legal. The bill was approved by the parliament and can now come into force any day Chirac decides to sign it. In a televised address on Friday, Chirac said he would ratify the piece of legislation.
‘‘The parliament has passed the law and the constitutional council has just found it to be in accordance with the principles and values of the Republic,” he said. ‘‘In a democracy, this has a strong meaning.”
