Chirac's party meets French unions on jobs law - by Tom Heneghan
French unions were to meet senior figures from President Jacques Chirac's ruling right for talks on Wednesday on a contested youth jobs law, bolstered by huge street protests demanding a new hire-and-fire law be scrapped. Conservative parliamentarians, drafted in after Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin failed to rush the reform past stiff public opposition, have offered no-holds-barred talks on the First Job Contract (CPE) but not suggested scrapping it.The 12 main unions are to discuss strategy on Wednesday morning before the first meeting with leaders of Chirac's Union for a Popular Majority (UMP) in the afternoon.
