Biodiversity: can EU politicians cope with the challenge?
The debate "Biodiversity on the political decision table" was part of the third day of the EU's Green Week. Political decision-makers from the three European institutions and one representative of the academic environmental profession were discussing the political response to the global challenge of increasing biodiversity loss.
German MEP Karl-Heinz Florenz underlined the need to take the biodiversity debate beyond "green circles" and include debate with industry, farmers and regions. "This debate is more than about the survival of the butterfly", Florenz said, "it is about the efficient use of our resources for our economies". The economy can not function without a healthy environment", he concluded.
