French Revolution! - an interview with Bruno Lafont (Lafarge CEO)
Bruno Lafont has spent his entire career with Lafarge, giving him an unrivalled perspective on the business and a clear vision of where he wants it to go. A Frenchman himself, Lafarge's chief executive officer is keen that this 123-year-old French company in cement, aggregates and concrete operations is seen as a truly international leader in its field."We operate in 76 countries, and I believe that our international presence is a key differentiating factor for Lafarge," he says.
"Our long-term research in cement, aggregates, concrete and admixtures, combined with our research focused on products, makes us a step ahead of our competitors in research and innovation," he says.
These are not empty words. Lafarge's first laboratory was built over a century ago in 1887, and immediately became the most important cement research facility in the world. Its latest huge facility was built in 1990 near Lyon, employing 220 people from nine countries, and it has eight technical centres around the world covering all four areas of operation. Lafarge makes the Carling-style claim of having "probably the most advanced laboratories for building materials in the world".
