EU To Open Permanent Aid Office In Beirut
PARIS (AP)--The European Union is opening a permanent aid office in Beirut and may set up camps or shelters for refugees returning to areas ravaged by fighting, the E.U. aid commissioner said Tuesday.
"We were very present yesterday, we will be very present tomorrow," Louis Michel said on France-Inter radio from Beirut. He said the E.U. is opening a permanent office in the Lebanese capital for coordinating humanitarian aid, the return of refugees and the rebuilding of the country.
However, he urged Israel to lift its air and sea blockade of Lebanon, saying it is restricting "the return to normalcy in daily life of the Lebanese population."
