Chirac discusses reinforced UN force in Lebanon with EU leaders
French President Jacques Chirac on Saturday discussed with Italy's Prime Minister Romano Prodi, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Erdogan and Finish Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen over the reinforced UN Interim Force to Lebanon ( UNIFIL).
"On one hand, on the composition of the reinforced UNIFIL, the president of the Republic insisted on the indispensable balance of the repartition of the contingents, which must reflect the commitment of all the international community, especially the European countries," Chirac's office said in a statement.
Chirac reiterated the necessity to specify as soon as possible the mission, the commitment rules, the chain of command and the means of the reinforced UNIFIL. France has decided to send extra 200 troops, most engineers, to help the UNIFIL consolidate the truce. The first unity of 50 troops arrived Saturday to Naqoura, a port in the southern Lebanon, near the Israeli borders. For their part, Italy, Turkey and Finland all declared ready to send soldiers while asking for more details on the precise mandate of the force.
