MEPs join campaign for legal force of EU citizens petitions
BRUSSELS - Civil society activists backed by several MEPs have launched a campaign for a new EU law recognizing the legal force of citizens' petitions signed by one million Europeans - in a bid to avoid waiting passively for the final verdict on the bloc's EU constitution which introduced the idea.
The European Citizens' Initiative aims to collect signatures for a petition that the European Commission should be obliged to act if asked by a million citizens to propose a change to an EU law. Around 40 MEPs from various political groups have so far officially supported the campaign, with the petition set to be presented later to all EU institutions - the commission, parliament and Germany, the next EU presidency.
