Euro-area inflation falls to 1.6 percent, economic optimism remains high
Inflation in the 12 nations that use the euro fell to 1.6 percent in October, the EU statistics office Eurostat said in a first estimate Tuesday, as the European Commission reported high confidence in Europe's economic recovery.
Year-on-year inflation was 1.7 percent in September and 2.3 percent in August — a gentle slowdown after hitting a high of 2.5 percent in May and June — largely on the back of soaring energy costs but also because of Europe's accelerating economy after years of little growth. Eurostat will publish its final figure for the month on Nov. 16 when it will give more detail on the sectors where prices rose and fell.
