France's top anti-terror judge raises doubts about military 'war on terrorism'
MONACO: France's leading anti-terrorism judge said Thursday it is an error to believe military force can win the "war on terrorism" — and warned that Iraq remains a magnet for Islamic extremists. Jean-Louis Bruguiere said foreign-born jihadists heading to Iraq are increasingly going with the goal to train, and then return to their home countries to plot attacks — not fight the U.S.-led coalition. He said the al-Qaida terror network is weaker today than it was in 2000 or 2001, but warned that counterterrorism officials are not taking any chances, even though the threat has appeared to cool in Europe.
"We are a bit in this sort of the eye of the cyclone because the terrain is relatively calm," he told reporters at a Monaco conference on the counterterrorism fight. "But our vigilance is extreme."
