ClientEarth and nearly 200 environmental, consumer and labour groups have written to top US and EU trade officials urging them to protect public interest law.
In the letter, they warn against including an investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS) mechanism in the proposed transatlantic free trade agreement.
ISDS allows corporations to request compensation from governments that adopt measures to protect health and the environment (e.g. moratoria on shale gas exploration, banning dangerous chemicals or even setting carbon emission limits).
We believe democratically approved laws must not be threatened for profit by corporate interests and call on trade chiefs to make sure environmental and public health policies are protected.
