Hungary's unemployment rate dropped sharply in the three months to November to its lowest level in nearly five years, defying expectations to remain steady, data released by the Central Statistical Office showed on Friday January 3.
The unemployment rate fell to 9.3 percent from 9.8 percent registered in September and October. The latest rate is the lowest since Feburary 2009, when the figure was 9.1 percent.
Economists had expected the rate to remain unchanged in November. In November 2012, the jobless rate was 10.6 percent.
The number of unemployed shrunk to 410,500 persons from 433,700 persons in the previous month. A year ago, the total was 467,500.
The youth unemployment rate also dropped in November, to 24.7 percent from 26.8 percent in October. The figure fell for the third straight month.
Separately, the statistical agency reported that the number of employed grew 2.2 percent year-on-year in the September - November period to 4.01 million. In the three months to October, the figure was 3.99 million.
