USA: Donald Trump’s Deadly Crowd Addiction

Over the course of his presidency, Donald Trump has indulged his authoritarian instincts—and now he’s meeting the common fate of autocrats whose people turn against them. What the United States is witnessing is less like the chaos of 1968, which further divided a nation, and more like the nonviolent movements that earned broad societal support in places such as Serbia, Ukraine, and Tunisia, and swept away the dictatorial likes of Milošević, Yanukovych, and Ben Ali.

USA:This is the deeper message in the Supreme Court’s ruling on ‘dreamers’ - by Morgan Mariettab

In a 5-to-4 decision that came as a major blow to President Trump, the justices ruled that the administration could not proceed with plans to dismantle Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA. The Obama-era provision halted the deportation of undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. at an early age, often referred to as Dreamers. Its provisions allow for those young people to live and work in the U.S. although doesn’t provide a path to citizenship.

NATO nations agree to stockpile medical equipment to prepare for second pandemic wave

Defence ministers from NATO nations agreed today to stockpile medical equipment — and to ask member nations to contribute to an emergency fund to buy even more supplies — as the alliance braces for a second wave of the pandemic.

Preparations to respond to future pandemic waves preoccupied the ministers during their two-day teleconference meeting, hosted by Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in Brussels. The COVID-19 crisis even overshadowed what, in normal times, would have been headline-grabbing disagreements among the allies.

Negative advertising : Facebook removes Trump re-election ads that feature a Nazi symbol

Facebook has removed a number of posts and ads run by Donald Trump’s re-election campaign that featured a symbol used by the Nazis for violating its “policy against organized hate”.

The takedown on Thursday came amid increasing pressure on Facebook from civil rights leaders, Democratic politicians, and the company’s own employees to take a stronger stance against the president’s ugly and at times violent and hateful rhetoric on the platform, though it is not the first time that Facebook has removed Trump campaign ads for violating policies.

Geopolitics - The new world disorder

SEVENTY-FIVE years ago in San Francisco 50 countries signed the charter that created the United Nations—they left a blank space for Poland, which became the 51st founding member a few months later. In some ways the UN has exceeded expectations. Unlike the League of Nations, set up after the first world war, it has survived. Thanks largely to decolonisation, its membership has grown to 193. There has been no third world war.

EU: Conference on the Future of Europe – a stepping stone to a European federation? by Juuso Järviniemi, Kalojan Hoffmeister

When Ursula von der Leyen was selected as the Commission President through shady backroom deals last summer, she promised a serious debate about the various institutional issues that caused turmoil in Brussels during last year’s European elections. The Conference would be the arena for this debate: the agenda will include questions like how to save the ‘Spitzenkandidaten’ system, how to reform European elections and whether create a European-wide constituency for European elections. Besides institutional puzzles, the Conference is meant to yield ideas for the EU’s political priorities for the years to come.

Populism:EU Right-wing terrorism: European Perspectives - by Joana Petrescu and team

The attacks in Halle (2019) and Hanau (2020) in Germany are part of a series of horrific acts of far-right terrorism that seems to know no end. It also knows no geographical boundaries: numerous European countries have been victims. Young people from Germany, Italy, France, the United Kingdom and Romania report. Terrorism generally refers to all forms of politically motivated violence used systematically by non-state actors with the aim of exerting psychological influence on the population - this is the definition of Armin Pfahl-Traughber, a German political scientist.

Right-wing terrorism is thus a form of terrorism based on extreme right-wing ideas. This is characterised by the fact that it considers one’s own race, nation or society as superior and focuses on national community. While right-wing extremism can generally be seen as the antithesis of democracy and is closely linked to anti-Semitism, racism and homophobia, its spread and form varies widely across Europe. Moreover, there is no unified record of right-wing extremist or terrorist incidents in Europe.

USA: ‘Make America grim again’: Americans haven’t been this sad overall since Nixon – Julia Conley

EU to coordinate request for NATO’s participation in Libya mission – Alexandra Brzozowski and Sarantis Michalopoulos

EU foreign minister met on Monday (15 June) with their US counterpart, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, amid a widening transatlantic rift over Israel and requests from some member states to step up cooperation on Libya.

During the meeting, some EU member states brought up the issue of the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean where the EU is “increasingly concerned about the recent escalations from Turkey,” EU’s chief diplomat Josep Borrell told reporters in Brussels.

“In any case, the situation is becoming worse,” Borrell admitted.

Asked whether Pompeo agreed to send a “transatlantic message” to Turkey, Borrell said the US side has been “considering the situation in the Mediterranean, but mainly in relation to the situation in Libya”.

Asked how the US is going to be involved and what other steps could be taken on Turkey’s behaviour, Borrell said the next EU foreign affairs minister’s meeting “will put the issue of our relations with Turkey on the agenda”.

However, while ministers “haven’t gone into detail on the situation in Libya” during their exchange, EU defence ministers are set to discuss Libya and Operation Irini on Tuesday (16 June).

“Allies are currently discussing how NATO could support the EU’s new maritime mission Irini,” a NATO official said. “It is important that the UN arms embargo is fully implemented.”

NATO member Turkey has strongly backed the Government of National Accord (GNA) of Fayez al-Sarraj, which in recent weeks has recaptured all remaining outposts in western Libya from pro-Haftar loyalists, who had sought to seize the capital Tripoli in a 14-month offensive.

On the other hand, Turkey has reacted negatively to Operation Irini before, saying it was biased, as there is no similar arms embargo on Libya’S southern land border, from where it is believed that pro-Haftar loyalists are getting their weapons to fight the GNA.

Note EU-Digest: "The EU should  use their own new combined naval forces IRINI to enforce the UN arms embargo on Libya if the US/NATO does not have the courage to tell Turkey's Erdogan to get out of Libya. It The EU should  use their own new combined naval forces IRINI to enforce the UN arms embargo on Libya if the US/NATO does not have the courage to tell Turkey's Erdogan to get out of Libya. It also shows once again that it is high time for the EU NATO member states to get their own defense force operating asap, and pull out of the outdated and dysfunctional NATO alliance spearheaded by the US . Case in point, NATO member Turkey, even though it is a member of NATO, unfortunately, in name only. For some time now,Turkey under Erdogan's leadership has acted as the "lone ranger".in the NATO. Philippines-US Relations: Populism Blindsided: America, Duterte, and the Philippine Military - by Mesrob Vartavarian

After four years in office, President Rodrigo Duterte has been unable to sever ties between the United States and the Philippine defense establishment. These linkages persist against Duterte’s wishes despite his thorough consolidation of power via political patronage and populist demagogy.

Duterte’s February 11 note to abolish the Philippines-United States Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) by August 2020 could have triggered seismic changes in the Asia-Pacific’s geostrategic landscape. The VFA, which took effect in 1999, is the keystone of U.S.-Philippine defense cooperation in the post-Cold War era. Its termination would endanger the 1951 Mutual Defense Treaty and 2014’s Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) which promotes maritime security in the South China Sea and interoperability between U.S. and Philippine military forces. Most importantly, the EDCA allows American troops, warships, and planes temporary access to a series of Philippine military installations from which they can coordinate appropriate responses to Chinese infringements on Philippine maritime sovereignty. Duterte hoped to engage China in a quid pro quo, whereby his expulsion of the American military would result in substantial Chinese economic investments, particularly across his political base on the island of Mindanao.

Travel: between EU and US: Americans Unlikely To Be Welcome To Europe In July, Here’s Why - by Tamara Thiessen

Europe is set to lift its border restrictions on international travelers in July. But only starting with countries with low infection levels, which rules out Americans and those arriving from the U.S.

In other words tourism and holidaying will begin in Europe from July 1, but not for everybody. The criteria for the lifting of the Europe travel ban will probably bar tourists from Brazil, Russia, Argentina and Iran too, as other holidaymakers return. Europe will also remain off limits to travelers from other high-risk countries where Covid-19 infection rates remain high.

Note, “The EU travel restriction is based on residence, not nationality,” says a spokesperson for the European Commission in Brussels. “Similarly, decisions on lifting travel restrictions would also concern non-EU nationals residing in a specific country"

But he says his heart almost failed a second time when he got the bill from his health care odyssey the other day.

“I opened it and said ‘holy [bleep]!’ “ Flor says.

US Evangelicals: Millions of Americans Believe Donald Trump Is Fighting Literal Demons

Donald Trump may not know how to hold a Bible, but that hasn’t stopped white evangelicals from being his most persistent supporters. The U.S. president’s evangelical followers have portrayed him as America’s deliverance, a flawed man recently converted to the cause around the time of his presidential campaign. In the decade prior, he’d bragged about sexual assault, cheated on his wife, and claimed he had no sins that needed forgiven. But these could all be overlooked because in 2016 he became a new Christian trying his best. Except the timeline is false. Trump has had a personal minister since 2002, a fringe televangelist controversial even within evangelical circles. Paula White is one of the most famous members of the neo-charismatic movement, and her beliefs are terrifying.

It lurks on the balance sheets of the big banks, and it could be cataclysmic. The new American Civil War - by Basil A Coronakis

The world is at crossroads. The evolution of democracy into a tool in the hands of self-reproduced civil servants who marginalise the role of elected politicians and curtail the freedoms of citizens, combined with the brutal misery that ordinary citizens feel due to the perversion of the market economy, is driving the Western world back into the dark ages.

The West is entering a new civilisation, and if the transition isn’t smooth, the collateral damage will be enormous and it may take centuries before Western society arrives at a new peaceful normal that can only be characterised by minimalism and moderation.

Journalism: United States added to list of most dangerous countries for journalists for first time

The murder of the Saudi columnist Jamal Khashoggi — in a year when more than half of all journalists who were killed around the world were targeted deliberately — reflects a hatred of the media in many areas of society, a free-press advocacy group said Tuesday.

At least 63 professional journalists were killed doing their jobs in 2018, a 15 percent increase over last year, said the group, Reporters Without Borders. The number of deaths rises to 80 when all media workers and people classified as citizen journalists are included, it said in its annual report.

The world's five deadliest countries for journalists include three — India, Mexico and, for the first time, the United States — where journalists were killed in cold blood, even though those countries weren't at war or in conflict, the group said.

"The hatred of journalists that is voiced ... by unscrupulous politicians, religious leaders and businessmen has tragic consequences on the ground, and has been reflected in this disturbing increase in violations against journalists," Secretary-General Christophe Deloire said in a statement.

EU not happy with US Tech Companies: Tech giants must open up about the coronavirus ‘infodemic’, say EU l awmakers - by Natasha Lomas

Platforms still aren’t doing enough to tackle disinformation related to the coronavirus crisis, the European Commission said today.

In a Communication it is pressing tech platforms to produce monthly reports about their efforts in this area, asking for more detailed data on actions being taken to promote authoritative content; improve users’ awareness; and limit coronavirus disinformation and advertising related to it.

It also wants to see increased cooperation from platforms towards researchers, and fact-checkers in all EU Members States (for all languages), along with increased transparency around the implementation of policies to inform users in instances where they interact with disinformation.

In recent years the Commission has pressed platforms for action to tackle misinformation — signing up tech giants and adtech players to a voluntary Code of Practice on disinformation focused on disrupting ad revenues and empowering reporting of fakes.

Since then, its assessment of platforms’ efforts to tackle malicious fakes has been lukewarm to say the least, with repeat calls for them to do more. It has also repeatedly called out a problematic ongoing lack of transparency related to these self regulatory efforts.

The coronavirus crisis has further amped up political pressure on platforms over their handling of online disinformation — and tech giants such as Google have responded with some measures aimed at pro-actively surfacing authoritative health information alongside coronavirus content (initially focused on the US, in its case).

Back in April, Facebook also said it would alert users who have interacted with certain types of coronavirus misinformation — displaying a debunking pop-up with messaging from the World Health Organization.

However the Commission said today that it wants to see more evidence that such measures are working.

EU lawmakers are also in the process of drafting new rules for digital services and platforms that could redrawn the line of liability and heap new responsibilities on tech businesses related to the content they host. A draft of this incoming Digital Services Act (DSA) is slated by the end of the year, after a public consultation kicked off last week.

Russia: From OPEC+ offender to enforcer

OPEC+, an alliance between the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), led by Saudi Arabia, and a handful of other oil producers, helmed by Russia, has agreed to extend record oil production cuts until the end of July.

The deal only went through after Riyadh cracked the whip on so-called free riders such as Nigeria and Iraq for producing much more oil than they had promised, demanding them to compensate with extra cuts from July to September.

Joining Saudi Arabia in calling for better compliance was Russia, which has itself struggled to comply with its pledged targets in the past. Russia, the world's second-largest crude oil exporter, complied with OPEC+ targets only for three months last year and that too largely owing to a monthslong contamination crisis surrounding its Druzhba pipeline. According to estimates by Moscow-based Vygon Consulting, the average compliance by Russia was above 80% from January 2017, when the OPEC+ cuts kicked in, to September 2019.

Capitalism has gone out of control: Private equity firms should be abolished

In his latest BIG newsletter, Matt Stoller (previously) relates the key moments in the history of private equity, from its roots in the notorious "leveraged buyouts" of the 1980s, and explains exactly how the PE con works: successful, productive business are acquired through debt financing, drained of their cash and assets, and then killed, leaving workers unemployed and with their pension funds looted, and with the business's creditors out in the cold.

US Democracy and the Age of American Impotence - by Stephen Richter

Virtually every month now, new controversies emerge swirling around Facebook. With its two billion users worldwide, Facebook has grown from a pet project started in Zuckerberg’s Harvard dorm to become far more than a social networking platform.

It has morphed into a huge news, entertainment and advertising platform with two billion users that is viewed by more people than any U.S. or European television network, any newspaper or magazine and any online news outlet.

USA in Dire Straits: Coronavirus pandemic, dire economy and social unrest upend US presidential race, despite Trump's positive outlook

Three concurrent crises scarring the United States - a deadly health pandemic, economic despair and widespread social unrest - have reframed this year's presidential contest and prompted national reflection over racial inequality in America.

Is the country on the cusp of a transformation, or will systemic inequalities exacerbated by the coronavirus crisis persist, allowing alienation and marginalisation to fester?

In weeks, the unprecedented strain has become the focal point of the ferocious White House campaign between US President Donald Trump and Democrat Joe Biden, two politicians approaching the disasters with very different strategies.

The Netherlands: Anti-racism demos continue across the Netherlands, Eindhoven next up

Thousands of demonstrators took part in anti-racism rallies in the rain in Utrecht, Nijmegen and Enschede on Friday and more gatherings are planned for the next few days.

In Utrecht some 3,500 people assembled at the Jaarbeurs square near the main railway station, but officials used social media at around 7pm to urge people to stop coming because the space was too full.

In Nijmegen, demonstrators gathered in the Goffert park, where tape had been stretched out to show people where to stand at the proper distance from each other. Some 750 people had been expected to attend, but police photos put the number at around 1,000.

In Enschede, around 500 people took part in the demonstration on the Van Heekplein – the maximum agreed between organisers and the local authorities.

‘I was positively surprised at how many people took part,’ campaigner Mitchell Esajas told NPO radio. Esajas, who helped organise the earlier protests in Rotterdam and Amsterdam.

Germany: Why are German neo-Nazis training in Russia?

Participating in paramilitary training is legal in Russia. Such training takes place under the protective umbrella of DOSAAF (Volunteer Society for Cooperation with the Army, Aviation, and Navy), an organization whose founding dates back to the days of the Soviet Union. The actual training, in which Germans reportedly participated, is provided by a club appearing under two different names: "Rezerv" or "Partizan." It takes place at a military facility on the outskirts of St. Petersburg. Until 2018, "Partizan" and its members were listed on the website of St. Petersburg's municipal office as a vigilante group in the Vyborg district. "That was prior to my taking office," a district representative told DW when asked about the matter.

EastMed Gas Pipeline: EU reiterates support for EastMed pipe, urges Turkey to respect international law - by Kostis Geropoulos

The European Union supports the EastMed gas pipeline project as one option of tapping gas supplies from the East Mediterranean for the EU, Peter Stano, lead EU spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, told New Europe on June 5.

“The EU supports the EastMed pipeline project,” Stano said, adding that this pipeline is a Project of Common Interest under the 4th Union List and the related feasibility study receives EU funds. It should be seen as one option of tapping EastMed gas supplies for the EU alongside shipping it to the EU by tankers in the form of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), he added.

On June 2, during a webinar, the energy ministers of Israel, Cyprus and Greece as well as US Assistant Secretary of State for Energy Resources Frank Fannon also reiterated their support for the EastMed pipeline.

However, on June 4, Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, meeting Libya’s internationally recognised leader Fayez Sarraj in Ankara, said Turkey would step-up its cooperation with Sarraj’s government,  to drill for natural resources in the East Med based on an agreement on sea borders signed by Turkey and Libya last November.

The EU spokesman reminded that European leaders adopted at the European Council in December EU conclusions clearly stating that a memorandum of understanding signed by Turkey and Libya on the delimitation of maritime jurisdictions in the Mediterranean Sea infringes upon the sovereign rights of third States, does not comply with the Law of the Sea and cannot produce any legal consequences for third States. “The European Council also unequivocally reaffirmed its solidarity with Greece and also Cyprus regarding these actions by Turkey,” Stano said.

The EU spokesperson reminded that on May 15, the EU Foreign Ministers also approved a statement about the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean, “which demonstrates the EU’s unity in supporting Greece and Cyprus and sends a clear signal and a firm message to Turkey that we uphold our principles and interests.” The delimitation of EEZs and continental shelf should be addressed through dialogue and negotiation in good faith, in full respect of international law and in pursuit of the principle of good neighbourly relations, he said. “The most recent escalating actions by Turkey regrettably go in the opposite direction,” he added.

Stano called on all international community members to abide by these principles and refrain from any actions undermining regional stability and security. “The EU and Turkey have a strong interest in an improvement of their relations through a dialogue which is intended to create an environment of trust. We will continue our diplomatic engagement with Turkey to try to steer our relationship towards a cooperative and constructive approach,” the EU spokesperson said.

Greece’s Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis sent letters on June 3 to the EU Council and Commission presidents protesting over Turkey’s activities in the Eastern Med. “We have seen reports about a letter sent by Prime Minister of Greece Mitsotakis to President of the European Commission (Ursula) von der Leyen,” Stano said. “We will check if the letter has already been received and reply in due time.”

Fannon told the webinar the Turkey-Libya MoU is “provocative” and could cause “instability” in the region. Charles Ellinas, a senior fellow at the Global Energy Center at the Atlantic Council, told New Europe on June 5 it helps that the US State Department has confirmed that islands are entitled to EEZs. This is the obvious outcome of applying the UN law of the seas, UNCLOS, he said. “But this support – by the US and the EU – and cooperation between Israel, Cyprus and Greece will not deter Turkey,” Ellinas said, adding that Ankara is determined to proceed with exploration and drilling in the EEZs of Cyprus and Greece taking advantage of the cessation of drilling activities by the international oil companies due to coronavirus and the crisis that has hit the oil and gas industry. “Turkey is still drilling in Cyprus EEZ, persisting with its East Med dominance plans – despite the crisis – clearly showing that there is no economic basis to its actions,” he said.

“Turkey is capitalising on its maritime ‘agreement’ with Libya, that it entered into specifically for this purpose,” Ellinas said, adding, “This, of course, impacts the rights of Cyprus or Greece to their EEZs and to a certain extent Egypt, but not Israel directly. Turkey is using the Libya deal, drilling in the EEZs of Cyprus and Greece, in order to create facts in support of its claims, perhaps in preparation for eventual negotiations”.

USA: Presidential Elections: Joe Biden puts the brakes on Trump jobs-report victory lap

Biden said the government's surprising May report showing the addition of 2.5 million jobs in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic was just a first sign of recovery from a deep and broad recession.

"There is so much more work to be done. So many Americans are still hurting," Biden said at Delaware State University, a historically Black university in Dover, Delaware.

Not everyone was benefitting from the improvement, Biden noted, as the African-American unemployment rate rose slightly.

The report underscored the challenge Biden faces in fashioning his own distinct economic message. Even while Biden leads Trump nationally in a head-to-head matchup, polls show the president is largely more trusted on his handling of the economy.

Biden, who has called for an ambitious set of federal programmes to lift the country out of recession, repeated his pledge to release a large-scale recovery plan soon.

USA: "The American apartheid is coming to a head": Ani DiFranco on oppression and "Prison Music Project" - by Mary Elizabeth Williams

"I can't breathe . . . I can't breathe . . ." Songwriter Bruce "Sincere" Dixon's furious words echo over a low, mournful hum. The inspiration is a grimly familiar phrase. They were the last words of Eric Garner, as NYPD officer Daniel Pantaleo held him in a chokehold on a July afternoon in 2014. They have become, unforgivably, even more resonant over the past two weeks, in the wake of the similar death of George Floyd. But when Dixon envisioned his track, it was a commentary not just on Garner's and Oscar Grant's deaths but an unjust and corrupt system that he knows well, as he serves out a 25-years-to-life sentence in New Folsom Prison.

"The Prison Music Project: Long Time Gone" began its life a decade ago, when singer and songwriter Zoe Boekbinder visited New Folsom Prison for what was intended to be a one-time performance. Over the next several years, Boekbinder continued performing, collaborating, and leading workshops there. Now, working with Ani DiFranco and Righteous Babe Records, Boekbinder's long-ago visit has become an album that combines the words of nine incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals like Dixon with the skills and resources of talent from the music world. Profits from the album will benefit communities impacted by mass incarceration, but this isn't an endeavor with ideals above its execution. It's a powerful — and eminently listenable — collection. Because of the constraints of the prison system, most of the artists could not be recorded in their own voices, creating one of the most hypnotically singular-sounding releases of the year so far.

Speaking to Salon via phone recently, Nathen "Nuruddin" Jackson-Brown, one of the album's contributing lyricists, spoke of the power of creativity in confinement. "I got a chance to learn to funnel stuff," he said. "I can funnel my anger into my ink and put it on paper. I can funnel my hurt, my feeling of loneliness being locked in a box with nobody on the outside… instead of bottling up and exploding in anger and/or violence in that environment I was trapped in." Now, Jackson-Brown is working share his experiences with others, and, as he says, "help them understand we are more than just a someone who committed a crime."

EU - BREXIT: Does the coronavirus crisis make a no-deal Brexit more likely?

On June 23, four years will have passed since the momentous Brexit vote. For more than three of those years, a "no-deal Brexit" perpetually loomed as a distinct and disastrous possibility.

The sting was seemingly taken out of that doomsday scenario last October when British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his Irish counterpart Leo Varadkar struck a deal of sorts on arrangements regarding the British border on the island of Ireland.

That paved the way to the Withdrawal Agreement and on January 31, the UK finally left the European Union.

A one-year transition period up until December 31 meant that 2020 was to be the year in which the truly hard yards were finally walked. The EU and the UK would thrash out the bones of their future relationship and edge towards some kind of normality.

Suriname: Washington, the Hague Should Not Sidestep Events in Suriname - by Even Ellis

On May 25, voters in Suriname decisively rejected the National Democratic Party (NDP) of incumbent President Desi Bouterse. Bouterse’s NDP declined from 26 seats in the 51 seat National Assembly to 16, behind the 20 won by Chandrikapersad Santokhi’s United Reform Party (VHP). Despite Bouterse’s occupation of the office since August 2010, Santokhi is now poised to replace him.

The VHP has formed an alliance with three other parties, the National Party of Suriname (NPS), the Brotherhood and Unity in Politics (ABOP) party, and Pertjajah Luhur, leaving it one seat short of the 34 to choose the president.

In a system characterized by shady deals, shifting alliances, and political intrigue, Bouterse has ample resources, and strong motivation to avoid ceding power.

A generation of business and military elites have their fates tied to him through past patronage. Leaving the presidency implies losing the immunity which has protected Bouterse 1999 narcotrafficking charges in the Netherlands, and his conviction in Suriname for the 1982 murder of 15 opponents.

US Economy; Complete disconnect between Wall Street and Main Street - by RM

Question, who or what is behind the major disconnect between Wall Street and reality, with stocks going up on the Dow for the past 4 days.Today by even more than 500 points, and this while economies are tanking all around the world, and while as many as 30% of the US workforce remains
unemployed ?

Some companies obviously are making excessive profits as a result of the present emergency situation, but in no way is Wall Street a reflection of the state of the US economy, as President Trump likes to brag about.

The above is, however another clear indication of the great disparity between "the have and have nots" in the US and has to be remedied by an aggressive and progressive new Democratic government, before it destroys the USA from within.

USA Anger and politics - The violence in American cities reflects the fury of polarisation

The summer heat has its way of energising our political passions. The American and French revolutions both began in earnest with the sweltering June and July air stuck to each soldier’s skin. In 1967, a “long hot summer” of violence erupted throughout the United States as protesters against police brutality and racial injustice clashed with police and the national guard in most big cities. The following summer saw similar protests, and—like today—a hotly contested presidential election. The current unrest in America is similar in many ways to the riots of the 20th century, with young people and minorities expressing grievances over both racial inequality and the relationship with their government. But two recent developments serve both to worsen the tensions between protesters and their opponents and to decrease the chance that the government will find a solution: political polarisation and partisan rage.

The turmoil of 1968 is the most obvious parallel to today’s. Then, the Republican Party’s Richard Nixon and Spiro Agnew were the candidates of “law and order,” pledging to crack down on the violence and extend sentences for rioters. That year’s election was also a major catalyst for the marriage of race and political party in America. Nixon’s and Agnew’s electoral strategies probably helped them capitalise on the anger and anxiety of many white voters. In a new research article about the contest, Omar Wasow, a political scientist at Princeton University, finds that the year’s protests “likely caused a 1.5–7.9% shift among whites towards Republicans and tipped the election”. Since then, characterising protests as racial violence and and promoting to crack down on it has become the linchpin of the Republican party electorial playbook

Airline Industry: Flying Long Haul During COVID-19: Air Travel Has Never Been Stranger

Heathrow, like Paris’ Charles de Gaulle Airport, was eerily quiet. I was alone when I went through security. All of the shops and restaurants were closed, there was no music or boarding announcements, and none of the usual din of tens of thousands of passengers making their way to their gates. Looking at the handful of flights listed on the announcement board, I realised that I could safely assume that any other passenger I encountered in the terminal was on my flight.

I'm used to traveling alone, but I wasn’t expecting the feeling of isolation as I moved from one dystopian scene to another. Flying long haul has never been stranger.

Inside the confines of the plane, it was as if passengers and cabin crew functioned in parallel universes: flight attendants served food and drink as normal – an act impossible to perform without being at least within an arm’s reach – to people wearing levels of protection normally reserved for highly dangerous environments.

US Right Wing Press: Carnage,’ ‘radicals,’ ‘overthrow the government’: How Fox and other conservative media cover the protests - by Paul Farhi and Elahe Izadi

‘

Conservative news outlets and pundits covering the protests erupting across the country this week have mostly emphasized images of destruction and chaos, blaming “organized” elements for the mayhem and framing President Trump’s calls for a military response as necessary to gain order.

Echoing Trump, some were quick to attribute the violence, without much evidence, to “antifa,” the loosely knit faction of far-left activists known for physically confronting far-right radicals that Trump attempted to designate a domestic terrorist organization on Sunday.

“Unfortunately, far-left radicals unleashed this carnage, this destruction across American cities,” asserted Sean Hannity, Fox News’ most popular primetime opinion host, on Monday night. His colleague, Laura Ingraham, went so far as to call it an attempt to “overthrow” the government.

US First Amendment: U.S. officials flat-out lie about their assault on First Amendment peaceful assembly - by Kerry Eleveld

U.S. officials crossed the Rubicon this week when they not only abetted and perpetrated an assault on peaceful protesters Monday evening outside the White House but subsequently lied on Tuesday about their role in the attack.

The chaotic scene of federal police using shields, batons, tear gas, and rubber bullets to clear Lafayette Park of peaceful citizens played out on TV screens across America, conveniently coming during dinner hour on the East Coast. The lack of provocation or aggression of any kind was clear as police armed in riot gear gassed protesters, ramming them with their shields to push them back.

Inside the White House Rose Garden, Donald Trump was simultaneously declaring himself the "president of law and order" and promising that "thousands and thousands of heavily armed soldiers, military personnel and law enforcement officers" would be deployed to stop the rioting and looting. Trump then exited the White House and shuffled across a cleared square of the park flanked by an entourage of Secret Service agents and the nation's top military and law enforcement officials, including Attorney General William Barr, Secretary of Defense Mark Esper, and Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Mark Milley, who was dressed in combat fatigues rather than the dress uniforms always donned by active-duty military officers visiting the White House.

Trump looked like a buffoon but the message was clear: He was declaring war on the constitutionally guaranteed right of The People to peaceably assemble. And Barr, Esper, and Milley were all there to help prop up draft dodger Trump's show of of force.

Once the reviews were in, however, everyone but Barr quickly made flimsy efforts to distance themselves from one of the most deeply un-American abuses of power by a president in modern memory.

Economics: The political economy of capitalist debt - by Nick Beams

In response to an article last week on the contraction of the US economy and the seemingly endless supply of money being made available to the corporations and Wall Street, a reader raised an important question in the Disqus comment section.

“Could someone please explain,” the correspondent asked, “what the writers mean when they say the money will ‘one way or another, be extracted from the working class?’

“I can understand how debt equals austerity in countries like Greece or Spain, but I don’t really see how this works in America. Isn’t the US trillions of dollars in debt anyway? And if so, what difference do the extra trillions of debt make?

“Is it the case that the trillions allocated to Wall St this month is money directly taken from social programs, or is it more opaque than that?”

EU: Germany′s top diplomat: George Floyd protests ′legitimate,′ urges press freedom

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas on Tuesday said peaceful protests against police brutality in the United States were "more than legitimate" and called for press freedom for those covering the demonstrations.

"The peaceful protests that we see in the US, involving many moving gestures, including by American police officers, are understandable and more than legitimate," he told reporters at a news conference.

"I can only express the hope that the peaceful protests don't turn violent, and even more the hope that they will have an impact," he added.

"With regard to the incidents involving Deutsche Welle, of which we have also been made aware, we will contact US authorities to find out more about the circumstances," Maas told DW. "We remain firmly committed: Journalists must be able to carry out their task, which is independent coverage of events, without endangering their safety."

EU: Lobbyist register to be tightened after Monsanto case - by Nikolaj Nielsen

Updated EU transparency rules set for the end of this year means lobbyists will have to declare much more accurate - and thus likely larger - figures on what they spend to influence EU decision-making.

The figures currently cited in the EU's joint transparency register are widely suspected of being under-reported.

The register is shared between the European Commission and the European Parliament, and lists thousands of companies, consultancies and NGOs that work to influence EU legislation.

The authority that oversees the register recently announced in a letter it would impose clearer rules to make sure lobbyists do not skirt their reporting obligations.

The issue came to a head when pro-transparency group Corporate Europe Observatory complained that the US giant Monsanto had failed to truly declare how much it spent in a campaign to steer the debate around its controversial weedkiller glyphosate.

Global Reactions To US Protests: Alarm mixed with glee as world is glued to U.S. protest coverage

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was first out of the block as protests began in Minneapolis, tweeting, “the racist and fascist approach that led to the death of George Floyd in the US city of Minneapolis as a result of torture has not only deeply saddened all of us, but it has also become one of the most painful manifestations of the unjust order we stand against across the world.” He went on to extend condolences to the family of George Floyd, promising to monitor the issue.

The Russian foreign ministry, meanwhile, took the chance Sunday to lecture the U.S. on media freedom after news outlets reported being targeted by police in the course of their work covering the protests in various cities. RIA Novosti correspondent Mikhail Turgiev was pepper sprayed in Minneapolis, prompting the ministry to express concern “about the increased number of police violence cases and unjustified detentions of journalists during their coverage of protests.” The ministry added: “we consider it unacceptable for US law enforcement officials to use special equipment — rubber bullets and tear gas — against media representatives after they present their press cards.”

Russia and China are also flooding social media with online propaganda targeting the ongoing unrest and violence in the United States, according to an analysis of recent Twitter posts by POLITICO.

Since May 30, government officials, state-backed media outlets and other Twitter users linked to either Beijing or Moscow have increasingly piggybacked on hashtags linked to Floyd, the Minnesota man whose death in police custody set off days of nationwide protests, to push divisive messages and criticize Washington's handling of the unfolding crisis.

America in turmoil: A Christian’s Questions for Trump’s Evangelical Voters - by Alton Frye

As an aspiring Christian (and sinners only aspire to meet the standards Christ set for us), I address you in the spirit of Isaiah: Let us reason together.

The intelligence with which we are blessed does not compel agreement, but it does command us to consider how our values relate to evidence, how our ends relate to means — and how our elected leaders reflect the moral goals we espouse.

Let me stipulate at the beginning that I believe you are good people and patriots who care about our country.

I am not smart enough, however, to understand how people of conscience have come to support such a dubious character as Mr. Trump. His outrageous performance at the national prayer breakfast — including his explicit repudiation of Christ’s command to love one’s enemies — prompts me to write this open letter.

Europeans don’t trust the US or Trump, poll says - by Annabelle Timsit

Donald Trump has damaged America’s standing in the world in his three years as president, and nowhere is this more apparent than in Europe.

A new report (pdf), published by the think tank European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR),  found that Europeans “no longer believe that the US can serve as the guarantor of their security.” They also overwhelmingly favor neutrality rather than siding with the US on global issues. The survey covered more than  60,000 people across 14 European Union member states, including France, Slovakia, Poland, and Spain.
