Support for Bush's war in Iraq is crumbling fast - by James Klurfeld

Time is running out on President George W. Bush's war in Iraq. From the left, from the right and from the center, his calls for staying the course are being roundly rejected. At the moment he is engaged in a classic stalling action with the midterm elections just weeks away. That's what his very interesting but inadequate speech Wednesday was all about. He's finally coming clean on the CIA detention centers because it diverts attention from the ongoing violence and lack of real progress in Iraq.

Bush's aim of making Iraq a democracy and projecting American power in the region as a way of fighting the war on terrorism is a failure. The invasion has only improved al-Qaida's ability to recruit terrorists and undermined U.S. long-term interests in the region. It has, for sure, made Iran the regional power. The question once the elections are out of the way will be how best to deal with those consequences.
