Middle East US positions warships near Libya

The US began positioning warships near Libya "in case they are needed", Pentagon spokesman Colonel David Lapan said.

The US announced it was moving the USS Enterprise, which has been stationed off the coast of Somalia, close to the Libyan coast. Washington also has aircraft ready at two military bases in southern Italy. The Obama administration said it was considering the imposition of a "no-fly zone" to stop Colonel Gaddafi using his nation's air force to bomb protesters. But Colonel Gaddafi laughed off a question from the US-based ABC News about whether he would step down. "My people love me. They would die for me," he said. The US ambassador to the UN, Susan Rice, described the comments as "delusional".

France said it would fly aid to the opposition-controlled eastern half of the country.
