Only five left-wing governments remain in the 27 member European Union after debt-ridden Portugal voted to boot out the Socialists at the weekend.
The country took a shift to the right as it prepared to take the tough austerity steps which are a condition of its £70billion bailout by the EU and International Monetary Fund.
The centre-right Social Democrats (PSD) yesterday began forming a coalition government with their traditional allies, promising to undertake the stark measures needed to bring the country back to financial solvency.
