Turkey looks beyond the US
"Turkey looks beyond the US
Relations between the US and Turkey are marked by underlying tensions that could potentially reshape the longstanding strategic partnership. With the second-largest military in NATO and borders with Iraq, Iran and Syria, Turkey was essential to the US' containment of the Soviet Union and is now seen as a stabilising force in the Middle East. Under US tutelage during the 1990s, Turkey and Israel forged a strategic axis that included close co-operation in the military and economic spheres. "
