Waiting for the gun in Greece
So good are the purchase prices and so generous the capital subsidies that windy Greece is overrun with wind plant project developers waving plans for thousands of megawatts of new construction. Applications for production licences total over 15,000 MW—more than 10,000 MW greater than the country's total installed energy production. But until upgrades to the national electricity network are built and permitting procedures improved there are major constraints on getting much needed new generation to the consumer. On the eve of this month's European Wind Energy Conference (EWEC 2006) in Athens, however, things could be about to change. The holding of a major gathering of the global wind power industry on the government's doorstep seems to be already paying dividends. The focus on wind power in Greece is much sharper right now than it has been in a long time.
Events in the Greek wind power market over the next few months will determine whether Greece can meet its EU target of between 2500 MW and 3500 MW of renewables installed capacity by 2010. Its current total stands at 573 MW.
