Political allies of Silvio Berlusconi, Italy’s premier, are backing away from contesting last week’s narrow election victory for the centre-left, in the belief that a government led by Romano Prodi will soon collapse.Mr Prodi is impatient to take office as he wants to make a thorough assessment of Italy’s public finances and act quickly to cut the rising budget deficit and public debt. The centre-left has a comfortable majority in parliament’s lower house but only a 158-156 seat majority in the Senate, the upper house, where every vote is likely to be close-run.
