Shipping details can seal the deal - by Edward D.Murphy

Getting a foothold in international trade involves a lot of legwork, plenty of meetings, understanding business customs in other countries and a pretty fair amount of legal expertise. One key factor is sometimes overlooked: the part of the transaction that involves moving goods from one country to another. Maine trade officials made the issue of transportation and logistics a key part of last Thursday's Maine International Trade Day in Orono, which which was centered on the theme, "Connections 2006." Maine has long been more closely connected with Europe than with Asia. The state's ports have often touted themselves as the American ports that are closest to Europe. But in the last 20 or 30 years, much of the growth in global trade has taken place in Asia.

Southeastern U.S. states have recognized the importance of extensive and inexpensive shipping options, and have pumped a lot of money into developing the infrastructure. By comparison, the Northeast has done much less.
