Colombia seeks closer trade ties with Europe
Colombia's foreign minister said Monday that she hopes her country's efforts to fight drug trafficking and human rights abuses will lead to closer trade ties with Europe, which has seen an increase in cocaine shipments from Colombia. Maria Consuelo Araujo met with her Portuguese counterpart, Luis Amado, on Monday and signed agreements on tourism, education and culture.
"Colombia always had in Portugal an ally in the European Union. It is a country that generates fraternity. And I hope the agreements we just signed will translate into a more coherent treatment (of Colombia) in the EU," Araujo said.
