EU wakes to the Sun - by Rakesh Dogra
The European Union is warming up to the idea of investing time and energy into environment friendly avenues like solar energy and clean coal carbon. Just recently, the EU decided to invest close to $50 billion Euros into related research and development. Of the above corpus, $23 billion Euros will be directed towards development of solar energy. Similarly, to achieve its target of equipping every coal power plant built after 2020 with carbon rapture, it plans to spend $13 billion Euros. With a view to lessen the pollution from other sources like transportation and buildings, EU intends to spend another $11 billion Euros by reducing their carbon footprints. Also, to encourage generation of electricity from non-polluting sources like organic wastes and plants, a dedicated fund of $9 billion Euros has been created.
