Clinical research in the development of new pharmaceuticals and treatments in Finland has witnessed a rapid decline. In 2011, the number of clinical trials on medicinal products carried out in Finland was as much as 30 per cent lower than six years ago.
The number of trials aiming at the development of new treatments collapsed after the government reduced funding for medical research.
The reduction is not yet reflected in the treatment of patients, but it soon will be, as new treatments cannot be introduced, believes professor Markku Heikinheimo, the Chairman of the Board of the Finnish Medical Society Duodecim.
