Chirac self-confident on Bastille Day
French president Jacques Chirac does not feel weakened but stands tall when he is abroad, he said during a traditional TV interview on the French national holiday (14 July). "When I am outside of France... I feel self-confident", he told the two biggest national French TV channels, TF1 and France 2 on Thursday. "I do not feel humiliated by the French no [to the EU constitution]", Mr Chirac added. The president's popularity has been plunging in France since the non to the EU charter, the European summit in June and more recently the victory of London over Paris in obtaining the 2012 summer Olympic games. The Bastille day interview was an opportunity for president Chirac to try to win back the confidence of French citizens.
