Would you go to prison for Karl Rove? - (Is the noose tightening around the neck of George W. Bush?)- by MARGARET WENTE

A CIA agent has been outed. A Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter is in jail for refusing to reveal her sources -- for a story that was never published. Bob Woodward has nobly offered himself up to do jail time in her stead. The special prosecutor is on the hunt for criminals inside the White House. Those criminals may include the President's evil mastermind himself. The standard media spin goes like this: Judith Miller, the brave New York Times reporter, is a hero for sacrificing her freedom in order to uphold the freedom of the press. Norman Pearlstine, Time magazine's editor-in-chief, is a despicable sellout for deciding to co-operate with the investigation. Karl Rove, the president's evil (did I mention sleazy?) mastermind, is guilty as hell for leaks that revealed the identity of a CIA spy (a federal offence) in order to smear an enemy of the administration. George W. Bush, who once vowed to fire all leakers, is a hypocrite for not firing Mr. Rove (whose nickname, let's not forget, is Turd Blossom, after a special Texas flower that blooms in cow pies). Press freedom everywhere is in danger. No doubt the plot will keep on thickening. Meantime, there are only two things I know for sure. Karl Rove is a snake. And press freedom is not in any imminent danger. Whenever you see the media stampeding for the high road, ask yourself why.
