Vladimir Spidla, Czech EU commissioner suggests ways for EU to cope with population ageing
Spidla said that ageing will cause 21 million people, or 7 percent of workforce, to leave the labour process by 2030. This will cause a direct decline in planned economic growth unless something is done, Spidla said. Time is running out. The rapid population decline will begin in 2011, he added. The extension of people's life span should not be considered negative. It is a clear success. But combined with a declining birth rate, it puts Europe into a difficult situation which it must prepare for, Spidla said. Czech Labour and Social Affairs Minister Zdenek Skromach (CSSD) said the Czech government considers the improvement of birth-rate-enhancing conditions to be a crucial task. He called for the state to help families not to be viewed as a burden but as an investment in the future and a precondition for solidarity between generations.
