Battle over Muslim veils heats up in Europe
Two European leaders separately voiced concern about the wearing of the Muslim veil on Tuesday, with Britain's Tony Blair calling it a "mark of separation" and Italy's Romano Prodi saying it should not be used to hide behind.
"It is a mark of separation and that's why it makes other people from outside the community feel uncomfortable," Blair said when asked his opinion on the veil. It has become a hot topic in Britain in recent weeks since former Foreign Secretary Jack Straw, now leader of the House of Commons, said Muslim women visiting his office should remove their veils.
A Muslim teaching assistant in northern England was then suspended from her job for refusing to remove a black veil that left only her eyes visible. Note EU-Digest: The "nigab" has no purpose in the European Public environment.
