EU: Chemicals Blacklist
The United States might challenge a planned European blacklist for chemicals that could put foreign companies at a disadvantage, U.S. Ambassador to the European Union C. Boyden Gray said Oct. 13. The blacklist is a part of new EU chemical-safety rules passed by a European parliamentary committee earlier in the week, and could become law in 2007. The regulations, which require importers and manufacturers to register chemicals, are meant to prevent up to 4,500 deaths a year at a cost of $6.5 billion to companies over 15 years.
