EU pressures Libya over death sentence of Bulgarian, Palestinian medics
European Union (EU) foreign ministers on Monday expressed concern over the death sentence given to five Bulgarian nurses and one Palestinian doctor by a Libyan court. They asked an urgent conclusion of the judicial process according to internationally accepted standards. The six medics were again condemned to death by a Libyan court last month in a re-trial for allegedly starting a HIV/AIDS outbreak intentionally in a Libyan hospital in the 1990s. "First and foremost this verdict ignores strong evidence from world-renowned international experts as to the innocence of the defendants," said the EU foreign ministers in conclusions of their first meeting in 2007.
EU External Relations Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner noted that the Libyan authorities have promised that the case will go to Libya's Supreme Court. As from Jan. 1, 2007, the five Bulgarians have become EU citizens as their country joined the bloc.
