Pierre Mirel, Director of European Commision’s Candidate Countries Enlargement Department stated that enlargement is potentially the most powerful foreign policies of the EU and praised its successful course thus far in integrating countries while speaking at the Economist conference, adding that Turkey's eligibility to become an EU member will prove a solid example of this successful policy of enlargement. He pointed out that the last enlargement was a turning point for bringing peace between Central and Eastern Europe mentioning, however, the necessity to closely monitor the alignment of the countries that prepare to join EU with regulations which has proven to help in the successful transformation of Central European countries to contemporary democracies. Recently, there have been successful reforms in Turkey and Western Balkans. An important aspect of the preparedness course towards EU entry is the screening process that Turkey currently undergoes.
