President Donald Trump on Thursday lashed out against Stephen Colbert and other members of the media during an interview with Time magazine.
Trump has been the butt of most jokes for late night hosts since taking office in January, but recently, The Late Show's Colbert has received the most attention for his criticism of the former reality TV star after he made what some called a homophobic remark while talking about Trump and Russian president Vladimir Putin.
"There’s nothing funny about what he says," Trump told Time about the "no-talent" CBS host. "And what he says is filthy. And you have kids watching. And it only builds up my base. It only helps me, people like him. The guy was dying. By the way they were going to take him off television, then he started attacking me and he started doing better. But his show was dying. I’ve done his show. … But when I did his show, which by the way was very highly rated. It was high highest rating. The highest rating he’s ever had."
As far as TV ratings, Trump could be overstating his claim. Colbert's Daily Show reunion episode on Tuesday is pacing to be The Late Show's highest rated episode in 19 months.
Trump also went after CNN's Chris Cuomo, who he said looks like a "chained lunatic," and Don Lemon, who he says is "perhaps the dumbest person is broadcasting."
"I do watch Fox in the morning, and their ratings have gone through the roof because everyone knows I’m watching Fox," Trump claimed. "But they’re pleasant. And if I do something wrong they report on it. I don’t mean they – if I do something wrong. But it’s really, honestly it’s the most accurate."
Trump turned his disdain to Cuomo, who went toe-to-toe with his counselor Kellyanne Conway just yesterday.
"He’s like a boiler ready to explode, the level of hatred," Trump said. "And ... the entire CNN platform is that way."
It was then Lemon's turn to be bashed.
"This Don Lemon who’s perhaps the dumbest person in broadcasting, Don Lemon at night it’s like – sometimes they’ll have a guest who by mistake will say something good. And they’ll start screaming, we’re going to commercial," Trump said. "They cut him off. Remember? I’ve seen things where by mistake somebody they bring in a guest and it turns out to be a positive. And they go, I mean they get just killed. The level of hatred."
Still, despite his loathing for CNN, Trump did compliment contributor and supporter, Jeffrey Lord.
"Poor Jeffrey Lord. I love Jeffrey Lord. But sometimes he’s sitting there with eight unknown killers that nobody ever heard of," Trump told Time. "And CNN actually is not doing nearly as well as others. They’re all doing well because of me."
